Apple introduced the first OLED iPhone , and experts were quick to declare that this release marks the beginning of a full transition to OLED screens, abandoning LCDs.
New reports, however, claim that the dominance of OLED screens is not true as Apple wants to keep iPhone prices low while increasing its profits.
Apple continues to consider the possibility of an iPhone LCD for the 2018 lineup, although it is not its first choice as it is still trying to address the production problems of OLED screens due to the limited capacity of its suppliers.
Let's not forget that the iPhone X will hit the market later than the other 2017 iPhone models because of the minimal supply of OLED screens that are offered exclusively by Samsung.
However, for 2018, Apple plans to expand its partnership with LG to provide OLED displays so that it no longer depends exclusively on Samsung.
LCD iPhones could serve as a backup plan in case Apple's efforts to increase OLED display production fail. The company is currently discussing with Japan Display the manufacturing of LCD panels.
The LCD screens that we encounter in the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 are considered by Apple as the most suitable replacement for OLEDs as they allow the use of thin bezels up to 0.5 millimeters, thus providing more space and a lower price.
We should note that LCDs are a temporary option until the giant decides the definitive transition to OLED screens. Apple's collaboration with Samsung for OLED screens will expire in 2019.
