Dutch product designer Ermi van Oers created Living Light: plants that produce light or light that produces plants?
Whichever way you look at it, the result will impress you. The light is produced by electrical energy produced by bacteria in the soil.
Let's see how it works:
During the process of photosynthesis, plants release organic compounds into the soil. This causes bacteria to produce electrons and protons, which are then used in a similar way to a traditional battery.
Continued: healthier plants produce more energy. If you take care of your plants properly, the Living Light will produce up to 0.1 mW. Enough to use as a night light, but not enough to properly illuminate a room.
Together with Plant-E, another Dutch company specializing in plant energy, Van Oers is currently looking at ways to increase the energy efficiency of Living Light.
“We are now completing the prototype. Our first batch, which will contain 50 pieces, we hope to ship to our customers in early 2018.”
