Microsoft 's Joe Belfiore announced at Build earlier this year that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update would bring back the OneDrive file that first appeared in Windows 8 , and now the company has decided to let insiders try it out again.

Officially called OneDrive Files On-Demand, it allows users to store browser files in the cloud without having to download them. The download process only starts when the user attempts to view a specific file, otherwise all files and folders appear just like locally stored content in File Explorer.
"With Files On-Demand, you can access all your files in the cloud without having to download them and take up storage space on your device. All your files, even those located online, can be viewed in File Explorer and work like any other files on your device," Microsoft says.
You'll be able to open online files from any Office or Windows Store app using the Windows file picker. So you'll be covered at home and in your professional life as OneDrive combines personal and work life.
The updated client is available for internal users and can be downloaded via a link that requires users to provide OneDrive credentials to configure the sync process.
The Files On Demand feature is located in the settings screen, and once the process is complete, a cloud icon will appear for each online-only file in File Explorer. This means you can actually browse files and folders without downloading content until you double-click to attempt to launch it.
