Windows Phone 8.1 is still Microsoft mobile operating system, with Windows 10 Mobile available on around 50% of devices. But it seems like an upgrade is needed as soon as possible. But why?
More and more developers are planning to stop supporting Windows Phone 8.1 on their platforms, with Facebook recently announcing that its apps will no longer work on this version from the end of March.
In a recent announcement, Facebook revealed the end of support for older versions of the app, including for Android and iOS. It went on to say that the official Facebook app for Windows Phone, Messenger for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, and the Facebook for Windows 8 and 8.1 desktop app will focus entirely on Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10.
Given the fact that Windows 10 hasn't been updated for months, this new tactic by Facebook is the best option as it includes all the latest features that are no longer supported by older versions.
Facebook recommends to users who cannot upgrade to the latest operating system version a solution that pretty much every developer abandoning Windows Phones provides.
"We plan to end support for messaging for some older versions of the Messenger and Facebook app. We are providing support to users affected by this change and offering appropriate recommendations for Messenger," a spokesperson for the platform said.
In addition to Windows and Windows phones, Facebook is also removing support for the following Android and iOS versions:
Android v55 and Messenger v10 for Android.
iPad v26, Messenger v8, and iOS released before October 10, 2011.
