Apple is denying rumors that hackers have gained access to hundreds of millions of its customer accounts and that they have the ability to remotely erase device data via iCloud.
Earlier this week, we reported on a hacking group called the “Turkish Crime Family.” The hackers claim to have warned the company that they would start remotely erasing iPhones if they didn’t receive the ransom they demanded, but they haven’t received any response from Apple. Motherboard reporters reported that they had access to one of the emails the hackers sent to Apple.
The group is reportedly demanding $75,000 in Bitcoins or $100,000 in iTunes gift cards, setting a payment deadline of April 7 for the company.
"There were no breaches of any of Apple's systems, including iCloud and Apple ID. The alleged list of email addresses and passwords appears to have been obtained at some point in the past from compromised third-party services," Apple said.
The company added that it is actively monitoring its systems to prevent any unauthorized access to user accounts. It also said it is working with law enforcement to identify the criminals involved in this story.
Regardless of what Apple says, all users of the company's services could change their passwords as a precautionary measure.
It should be mentioned that enabling two-factor authentication is available as an additional security measure from Apple and you can use it.
