There is no doubt that 2016 was not the best year for Windows Phone , and according to recent statistics published by Kantar for smartphone sales in November 2016, their decline seems to be unending.
According to the report, in 2015, twice as many Windows Phones were sold compared to 2016, while the decline is recorded in both European and other markets. In Europe, and specifically in Germany, Windows Phones fell from 5.1% to 2.7%, while in the United Kingdom they fell from 9.1% to 2.1%.
A decline is also observed in the French market, with the percentage falling from 7.7% to 3.6%, in Italy from 9.2% to 4%, while in Spain the market share reached 0.5%.
Overall, in the European market, Windows Phones are at 2.8%, with Android in first place with 72.4% and iOS following with 24.6%.
In Microsoft's home market, only 0.8% of smartphones sold in November were Windows Phones, a decrease of 1.5%.
In China and Japan, Windows Phones are almost non-existent, as in China only 0.1% of phones ran on Windows 10 Mobile while in Japan only 0.4%.
With Microsoft not revealing its future plans, it's hard to say whether this situation will change. Furthermore, Android and iOS are constantly gaining ground in the market, resulting in increasing competition.
So we have no choice but to wait and see if 2017 will prove to be a better and more profitable year for Windows Phone.
