Linkedout LinkedIn in Russia

Russia recently announced that LinkedIn could be blocked in the country after the service failed to store data of the country's users on servers within Russia's borders, and today it officially announced that the ban had gone into effect.

Russia requires major technology companies doing business in the country not to store data from Russian citizens on servers located outside the territory.

Local data storage should only take place on domestic servers, and LinkedIn appears to have failed to comply with this requirement. LinkedIn

According to a report by TechCrunch, LinkedIn has been blocked across Russia. Authorities have asked the country's ISPs to restrict access to the service or face hefty fines.

LinkedIn, for its part, confirmed the blocking of its services in Russia.

“LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for the entire global workforce. However, we are hearing from members in Russia that they are no longer able to access LinkedIn,” the company said.

The ban on LinkedIn is a very strong blow for Microsoft, as the company is facing the same problems in Russia, mainly due to the plan of the country's president Vladimir Putin, who believes that the country should immediately start using domestic software.

Vladimir Putin is trying to avoid software developed by foreign companies, claiming it could hide backdoors that allow other nations to spy on Russia.
