Donald Trump: Number one keyword in hacking campaigns!
It is not uncommon for malicious users to exploit current events to orchestrate hacking campaigns in every corner of the world. Another global phenomenon is being exploited by cybercriminals to extort money and information from unsuspecting users, and of course they could not leave Donald Trump's primacy in the recent US elections unexploited.
In recent days, the news that Donald Trump is the new president of the United States of America has been reported everywhere, Facebook and Twitter have been filled with posts mentioning this specific event, as well as all newspapers and magazines worldwide.
Hackers usually create a publication with an embedded link (which supposedly leads to a relevant article, usually from one of the leading news agencies). In this case, it is an e-mail titled "Donald Trump – The New President of the USA" and of course contains an infected PDF file that is intended to be installed on unsuspecting users' computer systems.
It's likely that 90% of users who see it, especially on social networking sites, will open it. However, the attached file could be hiding anything, such as a product that the hackers want to promote, or even worse, malware.
Of course, it's not the only way to cheat, but it's a good idea to be careful about the links we follow and the e-mails we open, and not to trust links suggested by our friends, unless we have checked them first.
Similar methods are sometimes used to deceive users with events taking place around the world and making headlines such as the killing of Osama bin Laden and the death of Michael Jackson that shocked the world.
Let's also not forget the malicious users who exploited the death of Amy Winehouse a few months ago and even more recently the death of Steve Jobs.
We should always be quite careful, especially when it comes to events of global relevance.
