Currently, there are two types of VR headsets: smartphone-based ones like the Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream View, and PC-based ones like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Both offer cheaper and more expensive VR experiences, respectively.
There's nothing in between yet, but at the Oculus Connect 3 developer conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to change that. He believes that standalone VR headsets that don't require a phone or PC to operate will fill that space, and he revealed that Facebook-owned Oculus is going to build one.
The prototype standalone VR headset that Zuckerberg showed off on stage looks a lot like a regular Oculus Rift, just without the cables required to connect it to a computer.
On the back of the headset is what appears to be a processing unit. The prototype headset also features built-in headphones just like the ones found on the Rift.
Zuckerberg didn't give any details about the headset, but he said it will have built-in cameras to track your head and body movements. Oculus VR isn't the only company developing standalone VR headsets. Both Qualcomm and Intel have shown off prototypes of their own standalone VR headsets this year.
