Microsoft announced that it will partner with an LA-based cannabis startup to create software that will help with the distribution and general availability of marijuana.
The application will run on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and is designed to facilitate sales and commerce in places where marijuana has been legalized for medical or recreational use.
The venture is a significant move, although there is still a stigma attached to the entrepreneurial nature of marijuana.
Although legally permitted in very few states – and in many others for medical use – marijuana is a stigmatized product and so big companies seem reluctant to invest.
Perhaps Microsoft will lead the way with this move, and other major companies will follow suit with investments in marijuana startups.
