Iran: data storage only on local servers

Iran: data only on our own servers… Last year, Iran blocked the use of the Telegram app and many other social networks when their administrators refused to help Iranian authorities spy on the country's citizens.

It appears that the Iranian government wants tighter controls on all messaging and social media apps operating in the country, and is trying to give the authorities a broader ability to monitor and censor its citizens. Iran servers

Thus, all messaging and social media applications operating in Iran have a period of one year to transfer "activity data" associated with Iranian citizens to servers in Iran, according to Reuters.

In order to comply with the new regulations, companies will have to set up data centers inside Iran within a year, and their applications may lose a large number of users by storing data on Iranian servers.

However, transferring data to Iranian servers may not be enough, as some of the most popular messaging services such as WhatsApp, Apple's iMessage, and Telegram offer end-to-end encrypted communication, meaning no one in between can read the content of the messages.

Just two weeks ago, Iranian authorities arrested eight women for participating in a modeling photoshoot online, which is considered a violation of Islamic law. The women were not wearing the mandatory headscarf, and their Instagram accounts were shut down, along with their Facebook pages.
