One of the largest content distribution portals, Kickass Torrents, has launched its own release group, called KATRG (Kickass Torrents Release Group).
If you're not familiar with the term Release Group, it's a group that undertakes the encoding and release of new (or even old) pirated content. In most cases, the subject of a torrent site release group is movies.
Some of the most well-known Release Groups were YIFY, which stopped operating after the intervention of the MPAA, RARBG, ETRG, and aXX0, which was active in the space from 2005 to 2009.
As TorrentFreak reports, the move appears to be the same strategy used by YIFY, releasing existing movies, with re-encoded content, through the Kickass Torrents website.
KATRG only has 20 torrents so far, and they appear to have been uploaded by an account registered three years ago.
It remains to be seen how long it will stay on the scene before copyright holders intervene..
