How to rename files sequentially in File Explorer with Tab

Previously, we told you how to rename multiple files in File Explorer without using third-party tools. Today, we would like to share one more tip related to renaming. In this article, we will see how you can rename files sequentially in File Explorer, using the Tab key.

In File Explorer, which is the default file manager in all modern versions of Windows, you won't find any dedicated button to rename files one after another. However, this process can be done easily using the keyboard.

The fastest and most popular method to rename a file in Windows is to select it and press F2. We remind you of the previous method: If multiple files are selected, the name of the first file becomes editable. After you type the name, all selected files will take the same name, but with an additional number attached to the name that increments automatically.

But if you want to give each file a different name, by pressing F2 and then Enter, then you will have to select the next file using the arrows, and again pressing F2 and then Enter again, etc., a process that starts to become very long and complicated. Αντ’αυτού, you can quickly and consecutively rename the files in the following way:

  1. Open a folder in File Explorer that contains the files you want to rename.
  2. Select the first file and press the F2 key to edit its name
  3. After typing the new name, do not press Enter. Instead’ of that, press the Tab key. The first file will be renamed and the name of the next file will become automatically editable, and so on.

Extra tip: If you want to go to the previous file then press Shift + F2 and it will take you to the previous file in the rename operation list.

This very useful trick works with all modern versions of Microsoft Windows, including Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista.
