What would an i7-6700K processor clocked at 6.50GHz look like? No, it's not science fiction. The Intel Core i7-6700K "Skylake" overclocks to 6.50GHz, with the help of liquid nitrogen.
A Polish overclocking company has managed to increase the Intel Core i7-6700K processor's clock rate from the default 4000MHz to an incredible 6531 MHz without disabling Intel Hyper-Threading technology.
The voltage to power the core had to be increased to 2,032V, and at the same time they used liquid nitrogen to cool the chip.
The MSI Gaming Z170 mainboard with DDR4 RAM was used.
As experts report, if Hyper threading is disabled and the last limit imposed by Intel on the CPU is removed, Skylake could reach even higher speeds of 7.5GHz and perhaps even 8GHz.
Keeping in mind that Skylake's overclocking capabilities are so extreme, since it remained stable at 5.20GHz with air cooling alone, it is very likely that we will see greatly improved overclocking in the next generations.
