As reports of the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal yesterday morning continue to come in, Google has started running Person Finder, a crowdsourced, missing persons database.
The company's goal is to help earthquake victims locate their loved ones.
The online app Person Finder, which offers support in English and Nepali, allows users to search for missing friends and family members by name. Those interested can even share information if there are reports of someone.
Google first launched Person Finder in 2010, after the devastating Haiti earthquake, and since then appears to have developed the app by testing it during several other major natural disasters, such as earthquakes in India and Turkey.
By Saturday afternoon, about 1,700 reports had been posted.
The earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, is said to be the worst to hit the impoverished South Asian country in 80 years. The death toll has reached nearly 1,400, and the search is ongoing.
