Lawsuits against Facebook seem to have become a trend. More and more people are opposing the largest social network by reacting to the uncontrolled exploitation of their personal data.
A 26-year-old lawyer from Austria, together with another 25,000 members of the social network, filed a lawsuit against Facebook this week at the Commercial Court of Vienna.
Austrian Max Schrems will take on Facebook in court over how it collects and uses user data. The lawsuit also notes how the social network uses the Like button to monitor members' choices, as reported by the BBC.
The charges contained in the lawsuit also state that Facebook was involved in the NSA's Prism surveillance program in 2007, as revealed by Edward Snowden in 2013.
The plaintiffs demand 500 euros for each piece of data that has been collected by the company without their consent.
However, as Max Schrems notes, money is not the only reason that made him go to court.
He declared that he wants to put an end forever to mass surveillance by Facebοok and ensure that citizens' data is absolutely secure.
“There is a large number of issues in the lawsuit and we hope to win them all in a landmark case against the American data collection services. ”
The Austrian started this campaign for the protection of personal data, as when he studied abroad (for a period at a university in Silicon Valley) he was very upset by the fact that “the belief of Silicon Valley is that it can do whatever it wants in Europe.”
Facebook has not commented on the matter .
