Free Internet? The Fire Department's phones were ringing nonstop at night, not because of a fire, but because of a prank played by a Facebook user.
In particular, on Friday evening, the Cybercrime Directorate was informed by the Fire Department that an unusually large number of calls to the emergency number 199 had been observed, resulting in the system being overloaded and experiencing great slowness and difficulty in servicing emergencies.
From the online investigation that was carried out, it was determined that a malicious message was spread on a social networking site urging its users to call the number 1998 to win a gift of 500 MB of data or 500 minutes of talk time for mobile networks.
The result was that a large number of users of the social networking page who saw the malicious post called the above number, the first three digits of which correspond to the national emergency number for the Fire Department Operations Center (199).
The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate is conducting an investigation to identify the internet user who posted the message in question.
