Sony Pictures' North Korea comedy " The Interview" grossed more than $1 million in its limited release on December 25, the company announced today.
The $44 million film was initially pulled after major theater chains decided to cancel its screening due to safety concerns. It eventually opened in 320 small and medium-sized theaters in the U.S., or 10% of the theaters it was originally scheduled to open in.
Sony's president of distribution, Rory Brewer, expressed his "gratitude" to the public in a statement. It is recalled that the company suffered an attack on its computer systems, for which the US government blamed North Korea and warned of retaliation. The film, a farce, is about the alleged assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
