The most widely used image standard on the web to date is jpg, but a new format, BPG, is coming to replace it.

According to early estimates, BPG is an image encoding standard that will offer JPEG quality with half the size requirement. The BPG standard stands for Better Portable Graphics, i.e., better portable graphics. This means that although the images will be compressed, it does not mean that the quality will be reduced, as happens with heavily compressed JPEG files.
One of the advantages of the BPG format is that it can have a lack of background, as occurs in PNG files, and in order to be displayed on a website, it requires embedding a 55 KB decoder so that it can be displayed correctly.
It is difficult to say whether the BPG standard will replace the widely used JPEG, especially if one considers that it does a great job meeting the needs that exist in online image display. Nevertheless, it remains an interesting proposal that we may encounter more and more in the future, given that the requirements for data compression and maintaining as good quality as possible will be increased.
