In the June edition of the Symantec Intelligence Report, Symantec highlights the latest cybersecurity threats, trends and insights into malware, spam and other potential risks.
The latest data breach reported in June resulted in the exposure of 1.3 million identities. This number may seem small compared to the 145 million exposed in the largest breach in May. However, while it was reported in June, this breach also occurred during the month of May. This brings the total number of identities exposed in May to over 147 million, ranking May as the second worst month for data breaches in the past 12 months.
There was an average of 88 spear-phishing attacks per day in June. This indicates a return to spear-phishing levels seen in May and April, after a decline in average daily activity in May.
A relatively new OSX threat called OSX.Stealbit.B has topped Symantec’s OSX malware list, accounting for 25.7% of threats found on OSX systems. This threat looks for specific bitcoin-related software on OSX computers and will attempt to modify the programs to steal bitcoins.
The number of Android variants per threat family reached its lowest level in twelve months. While there was no significant change in the number of threat families found in June, this may indicate that attackers have had more success with current threats, reducing their need to create multiple variants.
June was a quiet month for vulnerabilities, with (only) 438 vulnerabilities reported - the lowest number reported in the last 12 months. There were also no zero-day vulnerabilities disclosed during the month.
