The most popular addon for Firefox and Chromeis Adblock Plus which blocks ads from websites the user visits, but requires system resources.
Adblock Plus is the reason why Firefox and Chrome take up large amounts of system RAM, while also consuming processor resources, resulting in not only system lag (especially on older PCs) but also web surfing becoming a little slower.
Adblock Plus has become quite good at blocking ads and many iFrames, but with sites being filled with share buttons, it now has more work to do. This results in several MB more being reserved (it can reach up to 300MB extra) for its operation, while it can reach 2GB more (!) if a site is “heavy” with ads and iFrames.
There does not seem to be a solution to replace Adblock Plus, however Flashblock and NoScript can achieve good results, with less consumption of "precious" MegaBytes.
