Twitter has decided to spend $1 million to create a new technology learning center in the city of San Francisco . The center, which will be called the “ Twitter Neighborhood Nest , ” will be completed in partnership with the nonprofit organization Compass Family Services , and its mission will be to help poor children and homeless families in San Francisco learn to properly handle computers in their daily lives.
According to Twitter officials, efforts have already begun to find a space (near the Market Street area where Twitter’s headquarters are located) where the said charity project will be housed. At the moment, Twitter has donated 81 computers to the Compass organization, thus providing full technical support, while Twitter employees are expected to be involved in teaching those interested pro bono. So far, everything seems fine, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, there is a “darker side” to the whole project, as the establishment of this center is part of a broader agreement between the city of San Francisco and Twitter. As the publication specifically states, in order to convince the managers of the well-known social networking to keep the company's headquarters in the (not so cheap) American metropolis, the San Francisco authorities "donated" Twitter the not inconsiderable sum of 50 million dollars from future taxes! In exchange for this charity, the well-known social network undertook to promote new technologies in some of problematic neighborhoods that are plagued by poverty, crime and electronic illiteracy.
Although the motives of this charitable movement seem shady, what counts is the result, as with the above action many excluded social groups will have the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and resources that will certainly help them in the future to improve living conditions . We hope that other companies will follow Twitter's example in the near future.
