If you ever see any post on your timeline, or in a private message on Facebook, that has the title “Caution! Facebook Security Warning! Do this before your account is disabled” and urges you to follow a few steps to reactivate your account, just ignore it. It’s another Facebook scam.
Facebook has become one of the most popular websites, now boasting over a billion users, making it an ideal place for scammers looking for victims.
Jovi Umawing from Malwarebytes discovered a scammy post claiming that your account will be disabled if you don't follow certain instructions. The malicious posts are supposedly coming from Facebook, and some of them are even from the CEO of the popular social network, Mark Zuckerberg himself. In the photo below, if you look closely, you'll notice that Mark only has around 3,000 followers.
Of course, it has nothing to do with the real one, which has over 27 million followers
The “Facebook will disable your account” scam is designed to automatically spread the malicious post to your friends, who tag them in the post and follow fake accounts.
Click farming and like farming are well-known techniques used by scammers to collect clicks and likes, which they then turn into money. When a Facebook account, for example, has amassed enough likes, they can sell it to advertising companies.
Jovi Umawing of Malwarebytes says: if you see any link in such messages, even if it comes from your best friend, do not click or like.
“I reported the fake profile to Facebook and encouraged my friends to do the same. Hopefully, I won’t be the only one who asked the website to delete the fake account.”
