With the help of many TV commercials and armed with several gigabytes to hold thousands of songs, the iPod had an amazing move from its first release in 2001. But those days have probably passed.
Apple sold just 6 million iPods during the three months that included the holiday season, according to the company's latest earnings report. That's a 52% drop from last Christmas, the steepest year-over-year decline for the iPod in its history.

In the meantime, the company broke sales records for both the iPhone and the iPad during the same period. The success of these two products caused the death of the iPod.
As the chart above shows, the decline in iPod sales has been steady and noticeable since 2009, two years after the release of the iPhone, which essentially began to cannibalize sales of its “sibling” iPod. With the iPhone, one can have a huge number of music files along with everything else a smartphone can do. Thus, the usefulness of the iPod began to decline. Despite efforts with the iPod Touch, essentially an iPhone that can’t make phone calls, the iPod remained unsold. Even Steve Jobs almost predicted it when, during the iPhone presentation in 2007, he said that it was “the best iPod we’ve ever made.”
