Security firm IntelCrawler, analyzing the recent massive data breaches of Target's system, said it has identified the creator of the malware used in these attacks.
According to the company's report, Sergey Taraspov, a 17-year-old from Russia, is alleged to be the developer of the BlackPos malware. According to IntelCrawler's findings, the teenage hacker allegedly developed the malware in March 2013.
Initially, the malware was referred to as “Kaptoxa” (Russian slang for potato), and its function was described by its creator as a “Dump memory grabber” in the forums where it was first introduced. It later took the name “BlackPOS”.
BlackPOS is a RAM scrapping malware (it can destroy RAM in a nutshell) and is written in VBScript. It was designed to be installed on POS (Point of Sale, a platform for “secure” online transactions) devices and steal all data from cards that pass through the infected system.
The malware is currently circulating in over 40 versions – variants and is being sold on the black market for $2,000.
