The social networking site Facebook has changed the way people think and express their thoughts. Through their posts, their photos, the links they share, people of all ages are showing us what they think. While this communicative interactivity can be a great thing, unfortunately, for thieves and criminals it is a way to gain access to your personal information.
Identity theft on social networking sites like Facebook is rampant. One of the biggest experts on the subject, Frank Abagnale , who starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the Hollywood blockbuster Catch Me If You Can, is warning those using social networking sites. With nearly 40 years of experience as a con artist turned security expert for American law enforcement, Abagnale says: “If you put your date of birth and where you were born [on Facebook], I can steal your identity 98 percent of the time. Never put your date of birth and where you were born on your personal profiles.”
Continuing, it also states to “never post passport photos, but as much as possible, group photos.” With every like or any other post you make on Facebook you are exposed. “
