It's official now, the US government has demanded from Lavabit all of Snowden 's files and the SSL key to decrypt his messages.
Of course, that was the first thing everyone thought when they heard that the mail company Snowden used was shut down.
According to declassified documents published by Wired, Lavabit refused to hand over the private SSL keys that were used to protect all web traffic on the site, despite a court order and fines. Ultimately, Lavabit decided to shut down the service, but continued to fight for what he believes is right.
Reports indicate that Lavabit was served with a subpoena on June 28th, requesting that the government provide Snowden 's email information . Specifically, the US government requested information on incoming, outgoing, and the IP address used to access the inbox.
Ladar Levison did not comply with the government's order.
Thus, in mid-July, the prosecutor, with a search warrant, demanded the recovery of all information necessary to decrypt communications sent to and from Lavabit, including SSL encryption keys.
