6 people arrested at an Internet cafe in the Zografou area

Coordinated operation by the Economic Police Service and the Cybercrime Investigation Service at an internet café in the Zografou area, within which illegal gambling was being conducted

A total of six (6) people were arrested, aged between 25 and 64 years old,
of whom three were Greeks and three were foreigners.

Seized, among other things, fifteen (15) complete PCs and a button to deactivate them

Simultaneously, violations of labor, tax, and health legislation were found

An organized police operation was carried out yesterday afternoon (26.09.2013) by the Economic Police Service and the Cybercrime Investigation Unit, at an internet – café, in the Zografou area, as part of inspections related to the conduct of illegal gambling, as well as tax, labor and health legislation.

They were apprehended through the on-the-spot procedure, at the specific store, a total of six (6) individuals (three locals and three foreigners), who are charged, as applicable, with violating the legislation concerning gambling, uninsured work and other violations of tax, labor and health regulations.

Specifically, there are three men (a 37-year-old Albanian national and two locals, aged 61 and 64) and three women (a 29-year-old local and two Albanian nationals, aged 25 and 29), while the 48-year-old store owner was absent during the inspection and is being sought.

During the investigation, fifteen (15) complete computers were seized, the sum of (345) euros, and a computer shutdown button.

Additionally, violations of labor and tax legislation were identified, specifically:

  • no presentation of the Special Register of Newly Hired Staff (E.V.K.N.P.)
  • no display of the repair and maintenance logbook of the tax cash mechanism and
  • no payment of the legal fee for the installation – placement of four (4) specially modified tables for conducting games with playing cards.

All detainees are being taken today to Mr. Prosecutor of the Athens Misdemeanor Court.

The seized items will be handed over to the Customs Procedures Directorate (formerly O.D.D.Y.) for storage.

Furthermore, for violations of labor and tax legislation, the relevant reports that were prepared will be submitted to the competent Tax Office and Social Insurance Fund.

It is reminded that, under Law 4002/2011, which regulates the “purchase of games” and came into force on 22 August 2011, a penalty of imprisonment of at least ten years is provided for anyone who conducts gambling games without a license. When the games are technically a imprisonment of at least three years is provided and a monetary penalty of 100,000 to 200,000 euros per gaming machine. Finally, anyone who participates in a gambling game organized without a license is punished with a prison sentence of up to three months and a monetary penalty of 5,000 to 20,000 euros.
