Malicious Android apps sometimes manage to find their way into legitimate app stores. A perfect example is the fake app Symantec discovered in the Amazon Android Appstore . Its name: “ Password Wifi Hacker Plus .”
The developers of the app claim that it can discover the passwords of nearby Wi-Fi networks. However, Symantec experts say that this is not true.
In reality, the app does nothing more than display ads in the notification panel and through pop-ups.
“The app is connected to six different ad networks, some of which are quite aggressive,” Symantec says.
The ads displayed by the app are not only annoying, but also harmful. Experts say they could leak information, such as the user's location.
Symantec reported the existence of the fake “Password Wifi Hacker Plus” app to Amazon. However, similar apps could resurface at any time.
