Apple has now sold more than 100 million iPod Touches

Following the launch of the cheaper iPod touch this morning, Apple confirmed that it has now sold more than 100 million iPod touch devices since it was first introduced in 2007, making the device one of the Cupertino company's most popular.

"In addition to the launch of the new iPod touch model, Apple told me this morning that it has sold more than 100 million iPod touch devices since they were first introduced," said Jim Darlymple of The Loop.

It's not hard to see why it's sold so many over the past six years. The device is designed as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone for those who don't really need a phone, while its Retina display makes it ideal for watching shows and movies on the go.

The latest model has the dual-core A5 processor, which means it's ideal for gaming, especially with the thousands of games now available in the App Store. In addition to the iPhone and iPad, the iPod touch has helped Apple gain a larger share of the mobile gaming market while also stealing significant share from Nintendo and Sony.

Additionally, it's the cheapest way to get access to Apple's iOS ecosystem, which is home to 800,000 apps.
