Facebook faces charges over child's suicide

Facebook a Parents' Association filed a lawsuit claiming the popular website played a significant role in the suicide of a 14-year-old girl, Carolina Picchio.

facebookWhat the parents believe was that Facebook was used by the girl's classmates to spread a video in which the girl appeared quite drunk at a party.

The girl, having already been bullied at school by several of her friends as well as her ex-boyfriend, could not take it anymore and ended her life.

The Parents' Association believes Facebookis responsible for the unfortunate incident. Specifically, they are asking Facebook to explain why the video remained on the site for so many days after several of the girl's friends had reported it.

However, the authorities conducting the investigation are not yet looking into Facebook itself, although that could change if they uphold the Parents Association's complaint and hold Facebook liable for employees not acting quickly to remove the video.

This is not the first time something like this has happened in Italy. Several Google executives were on trial for failing to “take down” a video in time that showed some children abusing and harassing a friend. The court found three of the Google executives guilty and sentenced them to six months in prison with a suspended sentence.
