Japanese company Spiber has created an electric blue dress made from synthetic spider silk. The silk is at least five times stronger than steel, more elastic and flexible than nylon, and three times stronger than Kevlar.
One of the problems the company faced is that the spider does not produce as much silk as needed for mass production. Nature also makes it impossible to farm spiders like we do with silkworms, since when they have no prey easily resort to cannibalism.
But Spiber has managed to develop a technology based on synthetic genes. These genes are able to produce fibroin, which is the structural protein of spider silk, as reported by dailymail.co.uk.
This particular Silk silk has been used in wound dressings, since, as scientists report, it has antibacterial properties. could find many applications due to its durability and not only that.
Scientists are increasingly interested in spider silkbecause they believe it could be used for everything from making durable parachute cords to artificial blood vessels.
