Apple to release 12.9-inch “iPad Maxi” in early 2014 [Rumor]

While we already heard a strange rumor today about the iPhone 5S screen, now we're hearing another, even stranger one, and it concerns the iPad. Apparently, Apple is planning to release a larger iPad, dubbed the "iPad Maxi," in early 2014 in an effort to take on ultrabooks and notebooks with a 12.9-inch display.

The rumor comes from Korean outlet ETNews, which claims that Apple has already begun discussions with display manufacturers in Korea about the device. Insiders claim that it will compete with ultrabooks and notebooks by offering greater portability, better battery life, and a display that can compete with them.

But don't get your hopes up.

Not only does the name “iPad Maxi” sound ridiculous, but we’re also skeptical that Apple would make a larger iPad. The best-selling iPad right now isn’t the larger one, but the iPad mini, which has been stealing sales from the regular iPad since its launch.

Why would Apple make a larger iPad when its consumers prefer the smaller one?

Perhaps a larger screen would be better for those considering ditching their ultrabook for an iPad, but are there enough of those users? Are there really millions of ultrabook users waiting for a larger iPad to make the switch?

Probably not.
