NASA announced yesterday that they managed to use a laser beam to send the image of the Mona Lisa from Earth to a spacecraft in lunar orbit.
As explained in the video below, the Mona Lisa traveled a distance of 386,242.56 kilometers in digital form.
The image was sent from the Next Generation Satellite Laser Ranging station at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
Commenting on the achievement, David Smith of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, "This is the first time anyone has achieved a way to communicate with lasers at planetary distances."
"In the near future, this type of laser communication could serve as a backstop for the radio communications used by satellites. In the more distant future, it could enable communication at higher data rates than today's radio links offer.".
