Is Google going to release a Wi-Fi router on October 4th?
Google is rumored to announce its own brand of expandable Wi-Fi router at an event on October 4, according to sources at Android Police. The device will be called the Google Wi-Fi and will cost $129. The company is also expected to unveil the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, a new Chromecast that supports 4K, the Daydream VR headset, and the Google Home, an Amazon Echo alternative, at the event. Google's Wi-Fi router will offer a wider range of connectivity than most routers on the market. It will also offer some smart features similar to the OnHub, which boasts integration with Phillips smart lights, IFTTT support, all-in-one security updates, and more. The report also notes that Google's Wi-Fi could offer a "mesh" network mode, connecting multiple routers around the house, which means you won't be left out of the network if you go to a remote room in your house.
The rumor is that the routers will have Google’s signature security. Android Police, which got an exclusive story on the news, says it’s 90% sure the rumor is true (the 10% it leaves is due to its uncertainty that the mesh networking feature will work). It says: “We’re extremely confident that Google WiFi is real and that it will cost $129 when it launches. We’re pretty sure it’ll be announced on October 4th, alongside Google Home, because it seems to be positioned as a kind of companion device for the Home.”.
