The instant messaging app WhatsApp seeks to reassure its users about their privacy by encrypting all messages sent through it.
In a blog post, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum explained that every conversation on the app, whether private or group, will have full end-to-end encryption, making the recipient the only person who can see the message.
“No one can see inside this message. Not cybercriminals, not hackers, not oppressive regimes, not even us!” Koum writes. “End-to-end encryption helps make WhatsApp communication private, much like a face-to-face conversation.

The app's website explains that end-to-end encryption works by securing messages with a lock that only the sender and recipient can unlock and read with a special key. For added protection, each message sent has its own unique lock and key. This all happens automatically, and not even the company itself can read the messages.
WhatsApp's announcement comes after the biggest clash over the encryption and privacy debate between the government and a tech company. In February, the FBI asked Apple to unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters so authorities could access his data.

Apple refused, claiming that this was a violation of privacy. The FBI took Apple to court but was ultimately able to unlock the device without the company's help and dropped the lawsuit.
The case nevertheless created a national debate about whether authorities will be able to unlock other devices in the future and about the issue of privacy protection.
“For me it’s personal! I grew up in the Soviet Union during Communism and the fact that people couldn’t speak freely was one of the reasons my family decided to move to the US,” said the WhatsApp CEO.
