Cloudflare: Launches Domain Name Registrar with a Focus on Security

Cloudflare, one of the leading companies in terms of CDN and DDoS mitigation services, has announced that it will launch its own domain name registrar service focused on security.

Cloudflare: Launches Domain Name Registrar with a Focus on Security

“Even in our own search for a highly secure registrar, at Cloudflare, we couldn’t find anything that met our security standard,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “Rather than wait for one to hit the market, we built our own, fundamentally changing the way registrar security is delivered today.”

The company's new service is directly targeted at larger businesses that have been victims of DNS hijacking attacks, in which their users were redirected to malicious servers instead of real ones.

Cloudflare 's secure registrar service will operate under the principle that companies should have multiple employees approving any changes to domain settings at the same time.

This eliminates the possibility of an attacker hijacking the domain simply by changing a few entries in a DNS server.

Even better, and much more useful, Cloudflare also addresses the issue of accidentally “expired” domain names. All domains registered with Cloudflare will be automatically renewed a full year before their expiration by Cloudflare itself, which will then bill the customer for the following year.

The new service, called Cloudflare Registrar, is ICANN-approved and available today. No pricing is listed on Cloudflare's website yet, but don't expect it to compete with GoDaddy.
