8th Connected World Conference
Cloudonomics: The Cloud of Things!
February 9, 2016 – Divani Caravel Hotel
The 8th Connected World, which took place on February 9th in a central hotel in Athens, was successfully completed.
The conference aimed to highlight the potential of integrating cloud technologies in businesses of all sizes and their role as a productivity multiplier. It also aimed to highlight the business opportunities arising from the development and adoption of technologies based on the interconnection of information systems, such as Data Analytics, Internet of Things, as well as the vast range of implementations from the level of household use to the ecosystem of an entire city.

Participants included executives from the Telecommunications and Information Technology market, executives from businesses with technological activity, members of the academic community and representatives of start-up entrepreneurship.
The main focus was the realization that the cloud is redefining the economy and at the same time redefining itself, incorporating more and more everyday applications. We are at the dawn of a new era for networking, which will be shaped by the digitization and connection of everything to everything, with the aim of optimizing decision-making and automating everyday habits and processes.

1st Section: One size fits all?
There is a general view that the transition to the cloud is a panacea, while at the same time there is a large deficit in the adoption of cloud computing solutions by medium and small-medium enterprises. The purpose of the module was to highlight the necessity, the cost-benefit ratio and how it is shaped depending on the size of the business. It is also important for providers to effectively identify what the customer is asking for and what they can offer.
These questions are heard daily by businesses and organizations, but the answers are not always clear, especially regarding the possibilities of achieving the optimal combination between three factors: cost, performance and flexibility.
This section analyzed the layering of cloud services, from datacenters to integration to the end customer. It also highlighted collaborative models, perspectives, and the scope of application of business cloud solutions.

2nd Section: Analytics and Internet of Things: The new business opportunities
New fields of business activity in the production of innovation, as well as new horizons from the use of IoT and Big Data Analytics applications, are opening up for those who can integrate these rapidly emerging technologies into their portfolio of solutions.

Although in Greece the concept of IoT is just beginning to emerge from research departments towards real use, at the same time the first implementations of Greek ideas are already finding global markets open.
The European Union has already put the Internet of Things high on its technological agenda, announcing 140 million euros in funding for pilot projects in 2016. Its list includes applications in the fields of health, agriculture, wearables and vehicle connectivity.
And this is just the beginning, since, among other things, several discussions are being opened about the methods of extracting and exploiting the data produced, as well as the regulatory framework that will govern these processes.
On the occasion of these concerns, a very interesting debate was held, where four professors tried to convince the audience whether the application of Big Data Analytics to data originating from Internet of Things devices can be used without control or, on the contrary, there should be a strict regulatory framework.

3rd Section: From smart home to smart living
The days are very close when household appliances for sale will have IP addresses and WiFi, while smart electrical installations will be standard equipment in the home.
Similarly, at the city level, corresponding large-scale applications in lighting, water supply, traffic management, and even autonomous public transport vehicles are integrated into the urban fabric.
The speakers in this section presented the ways in which we are moving towards smart cities. From smart PPC meters to traffic control systems, the Internet of Things is entering our reality at a rapid pace.

The conference closed with a very interesting discussion regarding the business ecosystem of innovative start-ups. Essentially, the question was raised as to whether and to what extent the Greek macroeconomic environment can allow new businesses to operate with relative security.
More information as well as rich photographic material from the Conference and the individual sections can be found on the official Connected World website, as well as on social media, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
