Offensive Security announced on January 21, 2016, that their popular penetration testing operating system, Kali Linux, is set to receive a rolling release, following the request of many users.

Kali Linux 2016.1 is the first release of Kali Linux Rolling Edition and comes after five months of detailed testing, bringing you the latest and greatest penetration testing tools, as well as a new base synchronized with the upstream software repositories of the stable Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 “Stretch” (Testing) operating system.
"Today marks a significant milestone for us with the first public release of Kali Linux Rolling Edition . Kali switched to a rolling release model, previously when version 2.0 (codenamed “SANA”) was released, but the rolling release was only available via an upgrade from 2.0 to Kali-rolling for a select group of brave people," the announcement reads.
Some will say that rolling releases are not good, but many of you will have to agree with the fact that Kali Linux Rolling Edition will always have the latest and greatest penetration testing tools, as Offensive Security will try to update all pre-installed packages to their latest available versions.
Also, in the new Kali Linux 2016.1 update, there is the availability of the Kali Linux Package Tracker, an online tool that allows users to follow the development of the Kali Linux operating system through a powerful web-based interface or via e-mails. There have also been some significant changes to the installation process of VMware tools for guests.

Finally, please let those of you who would like to switch from the Kali 2.0 static release to the new Kali Linux Rolling Edition know that the upgrade process is quite easy. All you have to do is run the following commands, one by one, pressing Enter after each one, in a terminal with an application emulator.
</>CODE
cat << EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list
deb https://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib
EOF
apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade # get a coffee, or 10.
reboot
