Microsoft Americancompany that offers fake support services and even installs malware on computers using its name. Similar attempts to deceive users are being made around the world.
This time, the Redmond-based company is taking legal action against an Indian company called C-Cubed, which is allegedly “misusing the name and logos of the major software company, without permission, to provide technical support services over the phone,” as the India Times writes.
“Many of these tech support companies are able to gain the trust of victims by claiming to work for Microsoft, or as a certified partner of the company, or are in some way affiliated with Microsoft,” a company spokesperson said in a statement, detailing how these companies operate.
"In some cases, once the scammers gain access to the user's computer, they will use scare tactics, such as telling the user that if they don't pay for support services, they will lose all their files, their computer will stop working, or that personal information will be leaked online.".
Usually the scammer asks the victim to grant him remote access to his computer and once this is done, he develops software that runs on the victim's computer and infects it, creating a bunch of problems. To fix all these issues, the scammer asks for a small amount from his victims and eventually most of them agree to pay, thinking that they are really getting help from a service provided by Microsoft.
Microsoft recommends that no one accept technical support over the phone and never pay for services provided through remote control and for any monetary consideration.
