The US National Security Agency (NSA) was transferring raw, uncensored, confidential information to Israel, in violation of international protocol, according to the New York Times, citing statements by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
Confidential information shared between governments is generally redacted to prevent the disclosure of names or other sensitive information, but Edward Snowden revealed to the newspaper that raw data that had not undergone censorship or technical processing was systematically sent from Washington to its ally, Israel.
This data includes, for example, the content of private conversations and the names of people who communicated with each other, including American citizens who spoke with their relatives in Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
"This is one of the most egregious violations we have ever seen," stressed 31-year-old Snowden, who has been granted asylum in Russia and currently lives there.
According to him, this information was forwarded to Unit 8200, an elite unit of the Israeli intelligence services, roughly equivalent to the NSA.
As a document prepared by Israel and the NSA reveals, all kinds of communications can be transmitted from one side to the other, from uncut documents to telexes, faxes, voice recordings, and intelligence collected by spy agencies.
This document confirms that the US National Security Agency was “systematically sending” raw data to Israel.
