Online shopping site eBay has been hacked, affecting around 145 million accounts. Users' email addresses, passwords, and personal information have been stolen by hackers, leaving them all vulnerable to phishing attacks.
Since PayPal is a subsidiary of eBay, it's a rather suspicious coincidence that PayPal members have become the target of phishing attacks.
During the last months, from March to be more precise, users have received emails with the subject «View your recent activity» that come from the address paypal@e.paypal.com and appear completely legitimate.
PayPal has admitted that these messages are not from the company. The company notes that identity thieves are trying to trick you into revealing passwords and other personal information, which means they differ from the messages sent by the company.
