Five alleged hackers have been arrested and are in custody by US authorities, accused of participating in an insider trading ring from which they illegally gained more than 30 million euros, an FBI today.
Prosecutors are expected to announce the indictment of nine people in New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York, on charges of intercepting corporate communications and illegally trading based on the intercepted information.
The authorities have scheduled a press conference for 6:30 p.m. Greek time to announce the indictment of the nine suspects, who according to the authorities were part of an international ring of data theft and transactions based on inside information.
According to the case, hackers from Ukraine had infiltrated the systems of companies that distribute press releases, intercepting corporate news before it was made public, said a person with knowledge of the case.
Prosecutors believe the hackers then gave this information to a group of brokers, most of whom were based in the US , and made at least $30 million in illegal profits from trading in hundreds of companies.
This is the largest hacking related to insider trading. The leader of the group of brokers is suspected of making profits of at least $17 million, according to what the source said.
