Just one extra second is enough to cause disruption, temporarily bring down Amazon, delay airline flights, and confuse millions of computers on the planet.
Yesterday, an extra second to the official Earth time, causing services around the world to go offline. Social networks such as Instagram, Pinterest, Netflix , etc., as well as powerful web services such as Amazon.
Where did this extra second from that caused such online confusion? It came from the Earth's rotation slowing down by about 2 milliseconds per day. It may sound insignificant, but the organizations involved in keeping accurate time on Earth consider it necessary, so every so often, when deemed necessary, a second is added.
This addition was first made in 1972 and since then it has been repeated 26 times, the last one in 2012 , when problems again occurred in several services!
All this confusionis causing experts to seek solutions to ensure the proper functioning of services despite the additions, and for this purpose, a conference for next November on this topic.
