SEPE: An increase in online payments
Greek consumers have turned to online supermarkets and e-shops to purchase essential items and baby care products, amid the "storm" caused by the bank run and the imposition of capital controls.
As reported on the SEPE website, according to measurements by Convert Group eBusiness Consulting, in order to address the liquidity problem of banks, Greeks chose e-shops, resulting in a very large increase over the weekend in online supermarkets and e-shops selling essential items and baby care.
Consumers placed bulk orders, especially on Sunday, to ensure they had stock of essential items. These categories also saw a large increase in the average basket, in addition to the number of purchases.
According to the same source, regarding payment methods, during the weekend, according to the company's research, consumer orders were also made with credit cards, but the most popular method remained cash on delivery. According to estimates by the Convert Group consulting group, online payments via credit and debit cards will increase, as there will be little cash liquidity among consumers.
Overall, as the company observes, developments regarding the referendum and bank liquidity brought turmoil to Greeks' online purchases from online stores, which were in operation throughout the weekend.
The drop in purchases from e-shops was 40% in sectors such as online fashion, online beauty, online houseware, and online pharmacy.
