The inspirer and inventor of "Prometheus I" is Dr. Konstantinos Mammas. But what is "Prometheus I" and what is it used for? As he explains, it is "a digital tool with a special photographic scanning device and Internet access for the development of structured telecommunications and teleradiology.".
The interest here lies in the process that is carried out remotely, while even more important is the fact that the goal is to prevent lower limb amputations due to the diabetic foot, through an electronic file of the diabetic patient.
In short, "Prometheus I" "scans" the foot area and sends the image to a remote computer, where diagnosis, treatment and - depending on the stage of the disease - necessary prevention can be personalized.
Here is the huge difference compared to all the corresponding diagnoses that have helped telemedicine. Remote personalized treatment. It is a part of the future of medicine and if one takes into account the social and economic needs, as they are shaped today, it is logical to understand that the usefulness of "Prometheus I" and its decisive contribution to personalized treatment, no matter how far away the patient is, is valuable.
"Prometheus I" belongs to the category of medical innovations for which, naturally, its creator is proud. And as Dr. Konstantinos Mammas explains, who together with mechanical engineer Adamantia Mammas created this special medical tool, the reason he submitted his candidacy to the 3rd "Greece Innovates!" Competition is related to the need for prevention, as "the number of diabetics in Greece is approximately 1,000,000 and the cost of 2,500 to 3,000 amputations each year is unbearable". According to Dr. Mammas, this cost in Greece reaches 280,000,000 euros per year.
As for his expectations from participating in the competition? He himself attaches particular importance and invests heavily in his participation. What he is interested in showcasing is that "deep scientific medical knowledge and high technology in the field of medicine can be produced and applied in Greece.".
"Prometheus I" is a life's work for its creator and collaborator. Its production by a Greek high-tech production and use center for daily use around the world by specialized doctors would be a successful outcome for its creators.
Especially if this is accompanied by substantial results in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and the prevention of its complications, with an emphasis on patients who experience foot problems.
