Looking at it, it's definitely difficult to characterize this device... it reminds me of a huge tablet, a presentation board, a supercomputer... it's definitely all three together... we're talking about Microsoft, which features an 84-inch touchscreen and is intended for use mainly in professional environments, with an emphasis on video calls, real-time project collaboration, and presentations.
As reported in relevant press releases, it could eliminate the well-known problems that characterize a meeting room, with its projectors and laptops - while certainly being a factor of impressing a client. As expected, multiple users can touch/manipulate the screen simultaneously, in real time, even collaborating with users who are not in the same room.
The Surface Hub runs Windows 10 and includes the usual Office apps, as well as Skype for Business and OneNote. It can also "collaborate" with universal apps, while, in addition to the user's finger, it can also be operated with a special pen.
It can also accept voice commands and can be remotely controlled from a Windows, Android or iOS device. It also has two built-in 1080p cameras for video calls.
According to a report by technology website The Inquirer, in the US, the 55-inch Surface Hub model will cost $7,000 (around €6,200), while the 84-inch model will cost $20,000 (around €17,800). The devices will have built-in WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC wireless technologies, while they will be equipped with "a plethora of ports for easy wired and wireless connectivity.".
The Surface Hub was first unveiled at a Microsoft event in January, but was overshadowed by the futuristic HoloLens. It is expected to start shipping in July.
