The Google Art Project website for the National Gallery includes important works from the permanent collection, including paintings by major artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The high resolution of the images, along with a specially adapted magnification, gives all art lovers the opportunity to discover aspects of the works that they have never had the opportunity to see up close. Furthermore, it is important to mention that the National Gallery is the first organization to have exhibits with Greek metadata in the Google Art Project.

This initiativeby the National Gallery was carried out in collaboration with the company Post Scriptum, which undertook the technical implementation. In this context, the first virtual exhibition of masterpieces of 19th-century Greek painting was created, which is available in Greek and English.

Visitors to the Google Cultural Institute Google Art Project can search for works by artist name, work name, art form, museum, country, collections or time period. Integrated into the site are Google + and hangouts, which allowusers to invite friends, view and discuss favorite works via video, or take a guided tour with an expert guide to explore a specific theme or collection of art in depth.

The “My Collection” category allows users to save specific views of any work and “build” their own personal gallery. Comments can be added to any board and then shared with friends. It is the ideal tool for students and groups, who can thus collaborate on studying works or collections.

Additionally, the “compare” function allows one to examine two works of art side by side, to see how the artist’s style evolved over time, to connect trends between different cultures, or to delvedeeper by studyingdifferent points of the same work.
