Apple appears to have started a war against YouTube and Spotify, to the point that it has drawn the attention of the US Department of Justice, so they can conduct an investigation.
It appears Apple offered to pay for YouTube's licenses to Universal Music Group, if the company does not allow its songs on the popular video streaming website.
It also appears to be trying to discourage companies from renewing their partnerships with Spotify. In fact, the Verge's music industry source, who broke the news, says that "Everyone, even Tim Cook, is a murderer."
The motive of Apple is known, as it is preparing to launch a streaming service costing $10 per month. Spotify has 60 million users, with only a quarter paying a subscription. YouTube, on the other hand, provides songs with millions of views without any subscription at all. So we understand exactly what the company is afraid of.
Rumors say the new service will be announced at WWDC in June, and it seems the company has signed up a few artists exclusively, including Florence and the Machine, Taylor Swift, and others. If the rumors are true, Apple may have to pay a heavy price for its policy, and not without reason.
