The location of a router plays an important role, not only for the signal but also for the security of the data. The signal works exactly like in a cordless phone. If it is too far from the base, the signal weakens. Depending on the router, if the computer is far away then the connection speed is lower and the data will be slow to load.
A router's signal works well up to about 30m in any direction. However, if there are thin walls in the room or if it is placed in the wrong place, then someone can easily get bandwidthfrom the router.
- Placement of the router in a central location. For optimal coverage, it is good to place the router in the middle of the area that needs to be covered.
- Avoid walls, ceilings or rafters. If between the router and the device, corners or walls are inserted, if the router is on a ceiling or has to pass through many obstacles, then the signal will reach the device quite weakened and will not have performance. Insulated walls and walls made of brick or concrete block the signal. Effects on performance and signal speed can even be caused by aquariums or mirrors.
- Removal of other devices. Several devices operate on the same frequency, so it is advisable to avoid placing them near the rοuter.
- Scary Wi-Fi naming. A simple security method is to give your Wi-Fi a scary name to scare people away from trying to steal your signal. An even better solution for security is to implement WPA2 security.
- Installation of MetaPaper wallpaper. This wallpaper selectively filters electromagnetic waves and thus blocks the Wi‑Fi signal from leaving the designated area, while also providing signal boost in the areas where it has been installed.
